The exhibition space of the picture gallery was created within the perimeter of the former royal military arsenal after having been housed in the Palazzo delle Seziate since the end of the 19th century. Since 1992, the exhibition has been housed in the Citadel of Museums complex. The rooms of the Art Gallery house paintings by Sardinian artists from the 16th to the 20th century, paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries from the Genoese, Neapolitan and Roman schools, and a collection of Sardinian and Catalan retables from the 15th and 16th centuries. The new layout aims to create a space in line with a contemporary experience of immersion in visual culture, with free access to the spaces and greater appreciation of the works on display.
